Oetzi Village Umhausen

In the outdoor museum of Umhausen, you can retrace the famous Iceman in an outdoor museum

Can you imagine to have lived about 5,000 years ago: to exert the ancient artisan crafts-work, to go hunting and to live in primitive habitations? The Association for Prehistoric Buildings and Local History - "Ötztaler Verein für prähistorische Bauten und Heimatkunde" - in cooperation with the municipality, and guided by the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Innsbruck, created a very special adventure: the Ötzi Dorf Umhausen, that is to say the Oetzi Village.

The 11,000 sqm large outdoor museum is dedicated to the Iceman, the glacial mummy that was discovered in 1991 at the Passo di Tisa, on the Italian side of the Oetztal Alps. On the area you cannot only admire original reconstructions of late-Neolithic graves, cultic sites, huts, and the hut of the Iceman including the corn chamber, but also animals that already existed in the 4th millennium BC such as wild horses, Valais Blacknecks, Mangalica pigs, and aurochses.

A special highlight are the events held at the museum and the children's tours, illustrating the life in the period the Iceman lived. Ancient rituals are revived. By the way, also your four-legged friend is welcome and finds a bar for dogs right at the entrance.
